What Happens Under the Hood

When you upload a video, VidCrush sends it to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The server runs FFmpeg with optimized H.264 encoding settings:

Variable bitrate (VBR) — allocates more bits to complex scenes and fewer to static frames, maximizing quality per byte
Two-pass encoding for fit-to-limit mode — first pass analyzes the video, second pass compresses it to hit the exact target size
Audio optimization — AAC audio at 128 kbps stereo (or 64 kbps for very small targets)
Metadata stripping — removes unnecessary metadata to save bytes
Resolution scaling — if needed to hit tight limits, resolution is reduced proportionally (never stretched or cropped)

Output is always MP4 H.264 + AAC — the most universally compatible format. It plays on every phone, browser, and social media platform without re-encoding.

Platform presets automatically select the right level. For example, "Compress for Discord" uses Maximum compression with a hard 10 MB cap for free users.
